For the average outdoorsman, the opportunity to go fly-fishing for salmon, sport fishing for halibut, and hunting for huge blacktail deer would be a dream come true and something that would probably take several trips to multiple destinations to make a reality.  However, with a little planning, today’s outdoor enthusiasts can participate in all of these activities on consecutive days by staying at a single Alaskan lodge.

For example, Kodiak Island in Alaska, located roughly 250 miles south of Anchorage, boasts an incredible fishery and phenomenal outdoor activities.  The world famous Karluk river offers 22 miles of world class Alaska fly fishing with its annual salmon and steelhead runs.  In this river alone, anglers can cast for Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye salmon, Steelhead, and Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout.

Kodiak Island is almost bisected by Uyak Bay, a waterway known for its abundant marine life including whales, seals, otters, and lots of fish.  Alaska saltwater fishing in this region is a memorable experience with King and Coho salmon, Lingcod, Yellow-Eye, Black bass, and even Salmon sharks, which are known as the “marlin of Alaska” for their big-game fighting ability.

Of course, what makes Kodiak Island such a paradise for sportsmen is that in addition to all of its fishing; it also is home to the largest Sitka Blacktail deer in the world.  Kodiak’s average deer is roughly 175-190 pounds.  Hunting is permitted on the island with each hunter being allowed to take 3 Sitka Blacktail per season.  Alaska hunting is not just limited to deer though. Kodiak Island is also one of the best sea duck hunting locations in the worlds, with several species of duck frequenting the island.

For a hunter or fisherman, the chance to go fly fishing, sport fishing, deer hunting, and duck hunting in a single year would be memorable.  At Kodiak Island in Alaska, you could potentially do all that in just 4 days… truly a sportsman’s paradise!
